Seems the rim was giving a bit under the tailgut seeing the crease in the head.

This looks like an ambrotype. There's a big difference between the two processes. I wrote the seller and I'll post their reply if they write back. Cool photo either way and the Union case is cool.

Believe you're right. I refreshed myself on the subject by digging out my copy of America's Instrument, reading about the processes for each.

I'll post the seller's reply. I worked as a photojournalist for 14 years before shifting to medical social work. I'm not an expert, but I've a pretty deep knowledge of photography...we'll see. It's a very cool photo either way!

Photo quality is sketchy and I don’t think that one could definitively say this is a Boucher.

It's an ambrotype. The emulsion is crazed and flaking, though thankfully not on the guy or the banjo. The seller sent some close ups. He or she stated that they don't know anything about early photography. I do, quite a bit. But I didn't correct the seller. It's a cool photo but just like banjos, condition greatly affects the price. Cheers all!
