Here in the states CBS broadcast a concert with Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga. This was in celebration of Tony's 95th birthday, and it was also Tony's last concert. He did an amazing job, just considering his age alone, but he is also suffering from Alzheimer's, and 2 days after the concert he had no memory of doing the performance, a sold out Radio City Music Hall event. He sang all his songs, and his duets with Lady Gaga with no music or notes. After his solo performances, when she walked out to join him, you saw her stumble when he shouted out her name. This was the first time he had used it. In all their rehearsals he only referred to her as "sweetheart". It was truly an amazing event, and I smiled throughout the entire program.

This shows to me, the amazing power of music and performance in general. I often tell people that I feel no pain when I am on stage. I'm more limber, my hands, knees and back do not hurt, and I feel much younger. Music works parts of the brain that otherwise are not used frequently, and Mr. Bennett's brain, though failing in many ways, was able to pull him through this amazing performance.

My hat's off to Mr. Bennett and also to Ms. Gaga for her deep respect for this icon of American jazz vocals. Thank you sir, for all the joy you have brought to so many.

I admire Tony Bennet a lot. When he played at Centre in the Square in Kitchener, Ontario where I was living at the time, he checked the concert hall the afternoon before by clapping his hands, then said “We won’t need any microphones.” He did the whole show totally acoustic.
Another quote of his I like is what he said during the Iraq War - “We should be dropping food, not bombs!”

60 Minutes did a wonderful tribute about Tony and this concert with Lady Gaga. It's pretty moving.
