A friend of mine asked me to help identify the maker and approximate age of this banjo.  1880s? 

Perhaps some of you can help.

Tailpiece shows it to be a Cubley. They were made from roughly 1882 to roughly 1892, if memory serves. Very nice example, with those star-shaped shoes!

A full front picture as well as the peghead are necessary to determine a maker.

Tailpieces have often been changed, even decades ago. One usually can't decide on a maker just by that one bit of hardware. As Bob Smakula says, peghead and full front need to be shown.

I'm not saying this isn't a Cubley, but more photos could eliminate any doubts.

I will compromise: it is a Cubley tailpiece.
