Sorry if this has been beat to death already but I am looking for recommendations for a beginning instructional book on two finger old time style? I am learning clawhammer style also but my natural tendency is to up pick, and i like the sound of two finger as well. Thanks!

How about an ebook?

banjolemonade.com/product/2-fi...b-book-1/

Mandy's also got good courses for either style and her monthly / yearly lesson memberships are the best.

Matt Brown, a member here, has two-finger instruction on the web: Two-Finger Banjo (twofingerbanjo.com)

You specifically asked for an instructional book. Here is Sebastian Schroeder’s 2 finger series. He starts with index lead, then vol 2 is thumb lead, and vol 3 is mixed. He is coming out with a volume 4, but not sure what it will contain? You can download mp3 files to listen to and play with, I think he has slow and up to tempo, though I use AnyTune to slow it or change pitch.

They are rather simple learning books, but done well.

You don't say if you want index lead or thumb lead or both. Art Rosenbaum's books have a lot of finger style banjo tabs and explanations. Old Time Mountain Banjo is out of print but can often be found on Ebay, ETSY, etc. It is an EXCELLENT book.
If you're interested in index lead, any clawhammer tabs will get you started. (clawhammer is a finger lead, 2-finger method)
I have a couple of index lead lessons on Youtube and a few tabs in my pictures file here at BHO.

My recommendation is to go listen to and enjoy Chip’s playing on his media page right here on the Hangout. You won’t find finer examples of 2-finger picking. That listening should inspire you to watch his tutorial videos that he mentions above.

Pete Seeger book has a section on "Double Thumbing" just in case you already have it, which everyone should.

Chip is the greatest... definitely listen to his stuff, and hang onto every word of his advice.

Clifton Hicks has lots of up-picking/two-finger videos.

Agreed! It is an interesting and diverse style. I am just learning claw hammer but want to try this as well. Nora Brown on youtube, is a young phenom and her playing absolutely moves me, she is so skilled at this style and others . This is amazing and heartening. Inspires me to learn this style too.

jacot23 do you have banjolemonade’s two finger book and do you recommend it? I looked on her website and like the tunes listed in it. I’m considering the purchase.

I don't play 2 finger myself, but everything I've ever gotten from Mandy is great. BF2115 starting at midnight for 15 percent off everything on her site. The two finger course looks good and monthly/yearly memberships are great.

I was about to give up banjo 50 years ago, after 6 frustrating months trying to learn clawhammer, bluegrass style, and/or Pete's "basic strum". What changed for me? Discovering Art Rosenbaum's first book, and his chapter on 2F thumb lead, so I enthusiastically second Chip's recommendation. One important caveat, though, with ANY instructional approach in ANY style: You won't make much progress unless you have the song in your head and can sing it.
