This Banjo has a non-bottle cap style rim with a low crown 11 inch head. Which banjo head would sound best a top frosted or renaissance? Would one style be tightened more than the other and what are suggestions for Settings on a drum dial?

Double check the inside diameter of the tension hoop. Some of those banjos have an oversized tension hoop and require a 11-1/8" head. An 11" head might cause the tension hoop to slip off under tension.

Film selection for tone is simple, frosted is brighter and Renaissance is warmer.

Thank you, Bob, we don't want Paul to hear that "snap" from the wrong head letting go. How do I know? It's just a rumour.

I believe your assessment of the tensioning hoop is spot on, Bob. A medium crown 11” head fits snug on the pot but hoop is loose. The crimp hits the heel of the neck.
Thanks for the help.
I put the old head crimp to crimp and seemed the same but the tension hoop was not fitting.

I once owned on of those aluminum rim non-bottlecaps, and the gap between the tension hoop and the head always drove me nuts (thankfully, I didn't have to replace the head while I owned it).

In my parts box I happened to have an old flesh hoop that actually fit into that gap with just a slight squeeze. Not only did it improve the banjo's appearance, but the tone got so much better, I finally enjoyed playing the durned thing.

I set up bottlecap head tension to just below "oops" for best sound. Unfortunately, I can't tell you what that tension is.

Ok Mike, i’ve been there and done that. With an odd size head I will be careful. And still get it tight.
