I've been looking forward to this moment for quite a while!

I just finished setting up the last of my first batch of gourd banjos. These are the first instruments I've made from scratch and a lot of other stuff has been going on so they've been in the works for several months. It's been a really rewarding experience. I have a couple more in the works already, with plans for a batch of bottle gourd banjos after that.

The necks are all hand carved one piece spanish cedar* with ebony fingerboards, tailpieces, nuts, and pegs. The two-footed bridges are walnut. The heads come from a Jamaican goatskin I purchased from Jeff Menzies. The gourds range from ~9" to ~9.5". The gourd interiors have been sealed with shellac, and the necks and gourd exteriors finished in Tru Oil.

*The name seems to invite confusion since it neither grows in Spain, nor is it even remotely related to cedar; rather, it is a lighter-weight cousin of mahogany commonly used in classical guitar necks.

The old days are here right now with new things that were grown for this.
I am happy, I know what they sound like.

Beautiful instruments! Can't wait to hear them. Care to share plans for the necks? I have gourds we have just harvested.

Wow! Those are gorgeous! And, first build, huh?! Quite nice.
What I'm wondering is, are any of these for sale?

Thanks everyone for the kind and encouraging words. They mean a lot.

Per a couple of requests, I've attached a quick video of me playing number 21-002 (the one in the middle in the photos). I'm sure you'll all recognize the tune, though I've made a chord substitution in the B part. I'm not a very experienced fretless player, so please excuse the intonation being a bit off here and there.

@jayaw : Yes, though one is already spoken for, the other two (including the one I'm playing in this video) will be going up for sale. Feel free to PM me for details.

I didn't realize the video had to stay live on youtube for it to work here. Here it is again.
