Hello. With a bit of luck I should be collecting a 19 fret tenor banjo on Monday. I want to learn Irish tunes.
I already know one string is snapped on the tenor. Looking at the strings online compared to those I already have for my 5 string banjos, I notice two appear to be the same gauge- D'Addairo strings for 5 string and Tenor include a 12 and a 16.
Assuming the tenor is missing one of the higher strings (12 & 16, I assume) would it be appropriate for the sound to use the 12 or 16 I already have in the 5 string pack? Bit of a silly question but sometimes these things aren't as obvious as they seem.
Many thanks for any reply

If you want to learn Irish style in GDAE tuning the same gauge string from a five string set would work. The sets I have for Irish tenor have the gauges listed .036 .024 .018 and .012 bass to treble.
