In 2019, Rockyjo started a list of Banjo Players Deserving of the Steve Martin Award. It was a brilliant idea! Did the list ever get to Steve's committee? Will you keep sending your recommendations? Here's my candidate: Walt Koken. Watch him playing "Uncle Bud" at the California Banjo Gathering (on YouTube)

What criteria is used to judge applicants ? It must be more than just one sentence. That encompasses too many people.

I second Koken; his low profile in public probably hurts his chances.

Another, if he hasn't won before, would be Michael J. Miles.

I don't know who deserves it. I just wish that it were only one person at a time. Last year was ridiculous with 5 winners. It used to be called The Steve Martin Award for Excellence in Banjo and Bluegrass. I wish it had stuck to that theme...banjo and bluegrass.

in my opinion EARL SCRUGGS should win the award and have the money donated to the EARL SCRUGGS museum,,,,just a thought.

As a banjo-picking intellectual, I'd like to see the award one year go to someone for serious scholarship connected with the banjo or bluegrass.

Who is Steve Martin and why is he giving out an award?

If I get a vote I think I should get it, I could use the money.

Yes , Micheal Miles taught me clawhammer banjo in the 1980s at Old Town Folk Music. He certainly deserves the award as does Greg Cahill.
