Could you tell me what kind of instrument this is please - it has no make or model on it as far as I can see. It needs a clean and new strings so what are the best strings for a beginner please? Any ideas who the maker might be and age?

Much as I enjoy giving advice, the only advice I can give at this point is:
Post as many pictures as you can.
Front, back, inside, whatever.

And please post the pictures directly to the forum page. the pictures come out bigger than looking at your media page. And those of us with slow steam powered internet usually don't bother looking when we have to search for your pictures.

It's a Lute, made by Claude Rains when he was 14. Use monofilament fishing line.

DC5 There you go with the monofilament again! Rains' lutes, despite appearing to be delicate (some would say "whispy" to the point of non-existence), they could handle steel strings.

(An interesting side note about Claude Rains, his bare feet would leave an imprint of a shoe! It's unknown why that is.)

I've checked your home page, don't see any pictures there.

Don't let the Claude Rains jokes get to you.

"Darling, my husband asked if I'm still seeing you. I told him I'm not seeing you, but it ALMOST feels as if I'm not telling the Truth."
