Hello, some advice please. I recently bought a 1900's Windsor and Taylor banjo. I would like to give some TLC. My problem is " the machine head has 6 keys, but there is only 5 pegs to take strings. Please advise if you are able. Many thanks, Malcolm.

Post photos. Likely it is a zither banjo which is a five string despite the tuners. You will only use 5.

Lots of old British banjos had guitar tuners but they only used five strings. My theory is that in the old days guitar tuners were readily available overseas but banjo pegs were not so builders used what they could find. You will find that Framus and Musima out of Germany used guitar tuners as well. By the time they were produced individual geared tuners were plentiful whereas many British banjos were built earlier when three on a plate tuners were the norm.
That is an educated guess. Don't take it for gospel.

Thank you to all for that advice. Seems entirely possible to me. I will now move forward with the project. Again thank you.
