Hey everyone, I’ve been looking high and low for a good Irish tenor hard case. Can’t seem to find any other than the Gold Tone, and at $160 it’s a bit pricey for me. Does anyone here know where I could pick one up in the <$100 range?

I have an Irish tenor hard case I would sell for $75 plus shipping. It is from a 1914 Vega tenor in very good shape inside, with normal wear on the outside for a case over a hundred years old. Let me know if you would like pix and dimensions. Email dobowen77@gmail.com.

An "Irish Tenor" is the guy that sings Danny Boy at your grandmother's funeral. If you are looking for a case to fit your tenor banjo that your strings are pitched to what is popularly known as "Irish Tuning" (GDAE), be aware that any tenor banjo can be tuned that way. From a 19" scale Gibson TB-Jr to a Gibson TB-3 Mastertone (23" scale and full resonator) that Mick Moloney used the last time I saw him perform is a rather wide range of sizes. And not that all tenor banjos are Gibson made. My examples were just the smallest and biggest tenor banjos I could think of.

To get what you need, it is best to measure the rim diameter and total length of your banjo and use that as the place to start. Your definition of an "Irish Tenor" and someone else's may not be the same.

I usually use a TKL 8938 for openback tenor banjos, but they are more expensive than the price you hope to pay.

A few weeks ago I got a TKL at Bernunzio's to fit a tenor from Zachary Hoyt. 12" pot, 17 fret. Fits well wih room for a 19 fret. About $160 w/ tax.

It looks like the days of new hard shell cases for $100 are pretty much over.

Guitar Center is selling a "Musician's Gear" 5 string banjo case, regular price $80, on sale now for $64. You could pad it with folded towels to fit your banjo.

Other than that, unless there is a lightweight foam hard case that has escaped my attention, you'll have to either look for a used one or raise your budget.

If you are handy, do an internet search for how to build a banjo case. There are also discussions on this forum on the subject.

Considering yours is an openback, I think your best bet is to find a case designed for a 22 fret 5 string openback, and use the extra 3-4" in length to store an extra pair of socks, or cannabis, etc.

Unfortunately the neck rest at the peghead and the case accessory pocket will likely need to be moved or at least modified when you try to put a tenor banjo in a 5-string case.

Thank you for all your help guys. I found a good deal on a Gold Tone ‘Irish Tenor’ case that should fit it just like a glove for $129. I put Irish Tenor in quotes since someone should let Gold Tone know their mistake of selling cases (and even banjos!) using the name ‘Irish Tenor’
You’d think they’d know better.
…I’m going to go tune my Fender P Bass to GDAE and play on my new found Irish Tenor bass!
Have a good one everyone, and thanks again!
