I have a turn of the century Gruenewald "Professional" open back banjo. Does anyone know the origin and history of these banjos?

I've never heard of one. Would you mind sharing photos?

How interesting.

Tangential, but, I know a lot of families in Maine named Grunewald, German for Greenwood. I know some families in NY named Greenwood originally French Canadian Boisvert.

It's a name that has really gotten around.

The banjo was built by Lyon & Healy. I haven't heard the Gruenewald name before, either, but L&H manufactured many instruments for resale, marked with whatever name the buyer chose.

Yeah, this is a Lyon & Healy banjo. The 5th string tuner was unfortunately replaced with a modern geared peg, and the peghead tuners are 1920s replacements.

Thanks! I now see that the headstock is the same shape as an L&H I have and it is different from the headstock designs of other makers. Is headstock shape a meaningful way to identify these vintage banjos? Also, I found on-line a reference to a Gruenewald Music company in New Orleans that made banjos at the turn of the century. Do you know of them?
