Definitely different but good. I'd prefer it in any key but D.

Ha,
Well you'd have to take that up with Bill Keith but he's gone. I think Bill made a pretty good arrangement for D. It does take time to get used to playing in D but it's done all the time Sherry...Jack   p.s. it's gettin' chilly here in NJ Sherry, must still be warm in Texas. LN and I are planning to visit that great State soon...

It is a nice tune and a nice arrangement.

The original recording by Monroe (?) 1945 was in the key of E, and it sounds like a tenor banjo in the background, not a five-string. I suppose it was just before Earl and Lester joined the band. And long before Keith made his arrangement.

Man, it does not get any better than Bill Keith's arrangement of Footprints, and your tab is spot on. Thanks, Jack.

And it’s worth recalling Bill Keith’s story (in “Masters of the 5-String Banjo,” I think) about the time when he was with Bill Monroe that he ended his break to Footprints with that fragment from Nola, as in your tablature. Monroe ended the song abruptly, because, Bill concluded, one is not allowed to mess with Monroe’s song. But later on Bill stuck that passage back into his break on Footprints with the super-group Muleskinner (with Richard Greene, David Grisman, Peter Rowan, Clarence White, and perhaps Stuart Schulman on bass).

Hi Michael,
Thanks. Is this song arrangement in the Masters book? I've yet to buy that thing. Does it have full breaks to the songs?....But glad you liked it....Jack  p.s. Muleskinner was a fantastic LP

Hi Jack,

No, the tablature for Footprints is not in the Masters book. It includes only 2 of Bill’s arrangements, Perpetual Motion and Clinging Vine. In my opinion the book is still relevant and worthwhile, even over 30 years after publication.

Oh,Ok, thanks Michael...Someday I'll have to look at that book--so many have recommended it...
