WATERBOUND

(In this version, almost every verse contains an UP and a DOWN)

CHORUS
Waterbound, and I can't go home,
Waterbound, and I can't go home,
Waterbound, and I can't go home,
Stay all night, 'til morning!

[1]. I went up to see my gal
I went up to see my gal,
I went up to see my gal,
Clear skies gave no warning. [CHORUS}

[2] I showed up as the sun went down,
I showed up as the sun went down,
I showed up as the sun went down,
Gone until the morning. [CHORUS]

[3] Sun went down and the clouds came up,
Sun went down and the clouds came up,
Sun went down and the clouds came up,
Stay until the morning [Chorus]

[4]Clouds came up, and the rain came down,
Clouds came up, and the rain came down,
Clouds came up, and the rain came down,
Stay until the morning [Chorus]

[5] Rain come down and the creek rose up,
Rain come down and the creek rose up,
Rain come down and the creek rose up,
Stay until the morning. [Chorus]

[6] Creek rose up and the bridge washed down,
Creek rose up and the bridge washed down,
Creek rose up and the bridge washed down,
Stay until the morning [Chorus]

[7] Bridge washed down and my hopes went up,
Bridge washed down and my hopes went up,
Bridge washed down and my hopes went up,
Get to stay 'til morning!
[Chorus]

Water bound was one of the first tunes I learned when I took clawhammer banjo at the OldTown School of Folk Music back in 1983. Nice somewhat underrated tune. The lyrics are a bit repetitive as you have demonstrated.

Not every songwriter can do what Leonard Cohen did.
