Here is another relatively inexpensive (under $40.00) Christmas gift idea. Mikes Mute. I live in an apartment in Central Arkansas and work at night and most of the time like to come home and practice banjo. But that is difficult to do coming home from work at midnight. My wife and son are both asleep as well as the neighbors. But I bought a Mikes mute and I can tell you that I love this product. It makes my banjo sound about as loud as an acoustic guitar being strummed with my bare thumb. Easy to put on and takeoff without risk of moving my bridge. Anytime I find a product that truly helps me I like to pass the information along. I believe Mike is a member here on the banjo hang out himself so you should be able to contact him here. The phone number on his website is 801-400-2436. Give it a try.

I do like Mike's mute. I know some say "let the banjo ring,", but that's not practical for everyone.

I just bought a Mike's Mute and am truly floored by how well it works and what a nice sound it gives my Deering open-back banjo. I was puzzled at first how to put it on, but a quick YouTube video sorted that out very quickly. It really is an ingenious design and implementation. On trying it, I promptly ordered a second one to have handy for one of my other banjos :-)

I previously tried a slide-on Deering banjo mute, which 1) did not mute nearly as well, 2) did not produce the clear tone of Mike's Mute and 3) I was told that the Deering mute actually created a highly irritating/distracting buzz through hearing aids (which I was unaware of to the naked ear).

IMHO invest your money wisely and just go w Mike's Mute.

Do they make a Mike's Mute to fit a Steve Davis compensated bridge?

FYI Good Buddy and Don Smith1959 -- looking at Mike's web site at mikesbanjomute.com , it sounds like he has a mute type that DOES work w compensated bridges.
Though I imagine mike cabinet could probably give you a more definitive answer about a Steve Davis compensated bridge?

Mike's Mute will fit compensated bridges. I have an Arthur Hatfield compensated on my banjo right now to test my mutes.

As far as the Steve Davis compensated bridge, the mute will likely not fit because of the shape of the cut outs. Bridges that are not similar to a "Grover" type bridge are kind of hit and miss.
