I had just laid down for a nap, and not five minutes in, the phone rang.
The agent from the
National Safety Administration and Immigration Service
asked me if I was expecting any international sheepments.
I told her I was not expecting any international sheepments, and she hung up.
Probably annoyed that I was making fun of her accent.

Had I been awake and alert, I should have told her I was waiting for an ATM card from a banker in Lagos, Nigeria, and it has not yet arrived, after three weeks, and asked if she had any information about it.

Mike, I am assuming cell phone, no? If so, go to settings and you will find a way to stop your phone from ringing unless that number is in your contacts. Everything else goes to voice mail, and most spammers just hang up. Makes for better naps.

Land line.
Since I have received e-mails from more than half a dozen people, asking me to contact them about ATM cards, I would not have been lying.

Its a good thing you didn't ask about your plutonium shipment from North Korea.

I could not live like that. My phone gets calls day and night from spammers. Only those on the small contact list ring through.

Same here, it's so easy to manage now.  In fact, we don't even bother with a landline phone being plugged in anymore- the contact list of folks who dialled it was so small.

Unless I anticipate some incoming calls, my phone is off 99.9% of the time. My phone message states if you really want to contact me, use my email address (which I only provide to friends and business contacts). So I don't have to put up with idiots and slicksters. All unidentified text messages are deleted as soon as they're discovered.

I got a call (landline) a few days ago from Border Services telling me they had intercepted a package of illegal drugs sent to me...

I started laughing so hard I didn't hear the rest of the message.

If the powers that be had got a load of drug headed for me there would have been at least six officers with guns and armour breaking down my door. Not a phone call.

We seem to get one every Thursday about 11am claiming to be form the Visa security people - scammers of course but they still call us each week even though we put the phone down immediately.

Mind you I had the other side happen - my wife's bank decided to call us over some legal papers and sent her an email. Unfortunately I did not see this ahead of the phone ringing and an Indian voice claimed to be calling from her bank. I of course told him in no uncertain terms he was a scamming sleasebag and what he should do with himself before slamming the phone down. Later on we find the bank email advising us of the upcoming call - oooops! Had to apologise profusely.

When I pick up the phone, if the caller doesn't speak right away, I hang up. You just know it's an unwanted call.

I give them 3 seconds, then hang up even if they've started talking at the end of the 3 seconds.

Now that it is getting to Medicare reup time here in the US get ready for all the spam calls from people trying to sell you Medicare supplement insurance. Lately we have been getting a lot of calls from someone with strong accent claiming to be our grandson until we ask his name or ask which one. That normally end the call when they hang up.
The main reason we answer is because caller ID shows that the call is coming from our area code and exchange and the call could be from someone we know locally.

Many of these calls are not even people. "This is Lisa calling on a recorded line for quality assistance, how are you?" I answer "Asparagus" or some other nonsensical answer. Lisa the computer continues to try to sell me something.

I get lots of spam calls on my land line despite being signed up for every do not call list there is. (Unless that's the reason). It really isn't much of an annoyance; you see they don't want to talk to Elmo the answering machine. And if you don't talk nice to Elmo, you won't be talking to me.
