Went down today to see Barry Sholder and play a few fretless gourds. Wasn't sure how I'd take to it and was surprised how quickly the fingers figured out where to go. Still a lot to learn, but a good start.
Am finding that the lower I tune the better I like it. Right now playing in gDGBD tuned down to 'e' and loving it.
Barry is a great guy. If you are looking for a gourd banjo he would be a good person to consider.
I have never played a gourd banjo, I generally prefer tuning low on fretless banjos, particularly with nylgut strings. Everytime I have heard someone playing one of his gourd banjos, they sound great.
