i Accidently SPAMMED all Over Myself Looking up when to Sign Up for Medicare.

Be Aware; Medicare.ORG will SPAM You.....go to MEDICARE.GOV.

i'm 64 so i Was going to simply check to see when i Was  qualified to sign up for Medicare so i clicked on the first site i Saw ..... MEDICARE.ORG ..... (BIG Mistake). This Medicare.ORG site looks EXACTLY like the appropriate site Medicare.GOV. i Filled my info in page by page ZIP, Name, Phone, E-mail but there on the last page was a long list of insurance companies to choose from.

(UH-OH).

Even before i got out of that site and into the appropriate MEDICARE.GOV i Received 2 insurance calls and my inbox is filling up with senior discounts and insurance offers. The next day i literally got ~20 insurance calls. (Just what i Needed. More SPAM and phone calls). I tried not to be angry or rude but answered my phone with "No Insurance Please". some hung up immediately, some took me off of their lists, but some continued with more insurance questions so I stated; "you have gotten my name and numbers off of a SCAM site and I do NOT need insurance" and requested to be removed from their list.

if you go into the .ORG site (do NOT enter any valid info) you will see that the .GOV site looks very similar and you do not know you screwed up until after you entered your personal info.

Impersonating a government website; should this not be a crime? This happens too much. There are many misleading sites that charge customers for what are free government services. They prey on ignorance, and with our complex government agencies, ignorance is unavoidable. To style a website in such a manner as to deceive customers that they are dealing with a government agency is fraud and should be treated as such.

Not really. The very top of the site reads, not a government site. And there is text at the bottom of the page telling you exactly what they are doing with the information you provide, which is providing/selling it to insurance companies presumably trying to sell you supplemental coverage.

Try searching for auto or home insurance or anything to do with repairs/remodels for your home. You'll be bombarded with useful and useless information. I just block those type of e-mails and hesitate to give my phone number anywhere on the web.

I got a bunch of that when I turned 65 without going to the wrong web site. Once they’re through with you, you’ll start getting ads to prepay funeral expenses and long term care insurance.

The OP's post reminded of a time when our secretary (back when we had them) went to whitehouse.com instead of whitehouse.gov for a work related matter. It was, and may still be, a site linked to "adult" entertainments with a lot of pop-under windows which made it nearly impossible to exit the site without setting the PC on fire. She was mortified.

My son and daughter in law are in their 50s and they get spam mail all the time about medicare and insurance and..... car warranties (another subject for later).  Don't know about phone calls or e-mail, but probably as bad.

Having a warning like that on mass media would help. And this type of problem occurs for just about everything. When I use the internet or telephone I am very, very cautious. This situation is becoming so prevalent I stopped answering lots of phone calls. And, my behavior is becoming more impolite. I have considered practicing music in a utility building where there are no telephones.

I receive 5-10 call a day trying to sell me something. My reply is,,Would you place the phone farther from your mouth,,Your Breath Stinks. Then I have a automated Pig squealer, I tell the to talk to my partner. When the pig squeals, They hang up. My calls have dropped over 75%,,,

If someone designs a phone with an option that lets the owner indicate future incoming calls for a phone number should ignored and no longer recognized by the phone, they will be very popular.
