Some songs need a more subdued banjo approach. On this one I decided to record the banjo track without picks. I think it worked pretty well to soften the tone. I would be interested in the opinion of others.

One of my favorites.   A fine, soulful rendition.

Banjo sounds perfect.  Spare, clear, old.  Not a modern sound.  Not a modern style.   Suits the song perfectly.

Thank you for posting this.

I didn't notice either , you are bearing down enough to get good tone on steel strings is my guess.I always wished I could get the control with picks that bare fingers give

Hi Simon, great singing and great picking... a pleasure to hear!
I often play with bare fingers on openback banjo, I find a more natural sound...

Nicely done. I’ve known that song forever, since my family had the original 78 rpm recording by Merle Travis. Sounds fine sans picks. Some years ago I posted my version of Clinch Mountain Backstep. The first and third breaks are clawhammer, the second fingerpicked. With some tunes it’s nice to be able to play both styles; I’ve never found lack of picks a hindrance. The banjo is an openback Essex Concert Grand.
