I'm attaching a shot of some tab from Ken Perlman. How do you play the first half? Is he pulling off of 3 or 4 to the 2, kind of like an ASPO does on the first string?

The second string second fret is played as an ASPO. Make a barre chord on the second fret (XX222) and after striking the first string, make an ASP on the second string (by using the middle finger or ring finger of left hand and plucking/pulling of the second string that is fretted at second fret).

Yes Jan, that works. Ken Perlman can do things that most of us mere mortals can only imagine. In this case getting from the second fret barre A to the four finger A chord would require some practice time for me. I have learned some good techniques from his Melodic Clawhammer book, but I find myself making modifications here and here.

I would play the phrase up at the position of the high A chord.
