Hello Folks,

Sharing a recording from the weekend with my buddy singing and playing guitar with me on the banjo.

Hope you enjoy it.

Thanks for posting that, Brendan. As a Bluegrass player I have always preferred Shady Grove played this way rather than the rip roaring version most Bluegrass players seem to prefer.

Note that the bluegrass version of “Shady Grove” is really “Fly Around My Pretty Little Miss” / “Susananna Gal” with Shady Grove lyrics. It only uses the first part of the tune too.

Gosh I just listened to to the bluegrass version. Oh dear. I'll stick to the folk version as posted here. Over here those of a certain and now wider generation know the tune is known as Matty Groves by Fairport Convention.

I love this version and this recording a lot. But in my opinion, what we are hearing here, is the lyrics of "Matty Groves" sung to the melody of "Shady Grove". It is wonderful though, and I love the way they are doing this and Sandy Danny singing it… It's one of my favourites.

Thanks everyone. I'll check out the bluegrass version since I am not very familiar with it.

This is a nice old-time version, too:

Very good! I usually hate this song, but it sounds good here. Your friend is a good singer.

A very fine performance, Brendan! I love that sweet high break you threw in there.
