This week marks the 85th Old Time Fiddlers' Convention in Galax, VA ~ way back when I was a teenager, I attended this event and learned a C minor tuning on the banjo from fiddlers Tommy Jarrell & Buddy Pendleton, who also fooled around with the banjo a bit. I came home and wrote this tune as a result and ended up using it as the title for my first Rounder Records album, "FORTY YEARS LATE". Here it is ~
This was among my favorite banjo albums ever. I had a copy of it but I lost all my music collection to a flooded storage room decades ago.
It really rattled my world back then in a good way. Thanks for that, Butch!
Frank - I have a copy of that album collecting dust. Send me your info and I’d be happy to give it to you.
I probably had one of the first copies of this album when it first came out in the late 70’s. I still have it.
Butch came to Norwich (CT) and did a small show shortly after he bought the RB-4. I asked him if I could see it and he just handed it to me!
Then I asked him to play 40 Years Late and he obliged.
I still think that tune ranks up there with the best of them. Every time I listen to it it just blows me away.
You are one of My favorite pickers. I have that album, just fabulous.
Thanks for all the good music You played,
Also I used to see You on Comberland Hylanders show, but can't find it now.
What a beautiful tuning! Great picking too.
This was the first album I bought of Butch's playing and the one that made me a fan.
