I just bought a Earl Scruggs Mastertone what would be the best leather for that banjo. Any help is appreciated

I’m a fan of the Huber straps. Lakota Leathers are also really nice

I second the Lakota straps I have them on every instrument I own and love the feel of them really soft on your neck

Make that 3 for Lakota! I actually have one on my Scruggs as well.

If you like historical resonance, check with Jim Mills to see if he still offers the "Early Earl" narrow strap like Earl used in the 1940s and 50s. I have one on my Scruggs. Nicely made. Looks great.

I like my Lakota strap, but I think I made a big mistake (thinking more is better) when I got a 3 inch strap. I don't think it works any better, keeps getting twisted when I put on the banjo, and is hard to arrange in my hard shell case so i can close the latches. Two inches would probably be a much as anyone needs. IMHO

As long as it's about half an inch wide and only worn over one shoulder so it really messes with your back, then I think you'll be fine.

I'm kidding, please don't buy and wear a strap like that. But seriously, I think my next purchase for my banjo will be a Lakota leather strap based on all the recommendations I've seen. I've been using the levy strap that came with my current banjo, and it has been very comfortable.

I agree with you on the 3 inch strap I have one of those and i did not care for the wider strap it just sits in one of my cases now not being used one of these days i will run into someone that wants it and give them a heck of a deal on it

My favorite is by far the neotech wide banjo strap. It does a great job distributing the weight of the banjo and the stretchy-ness of it is really nice. That would be my first recommendation. I used Lakota straps before and also one custom leather strap a guy made me but as soon as I tried the Neotech I was sold to several. The only thing I wish is that they were cradle straps but the buckles haven’t bothered me. Check out the way Noam uses his. He has modified it into a cradle strap and it’s been working for him for a long time.
