what a shock. I have spoken with Spencer many times and he was always great to talk to. I used to speak to Hub. A great family. Very sad.

Thank you, Brian and Donald, for this sad update and for the link to the GoFundMe page.

Thanks for bringing this to our collective attention. I like many others here pitched in a little to help.

The article linked in the OP, sadly, says BNL is halting new subscriptions, and not renewing current subscriptions. A magazine cannot survive without subscribers. This does not bode well for the future of BNL.

In my professional career magazines is what I did. I was Art Director and did all layout/design for over a dozen regional publications (high-end color mags, think National Geographic quality). My career is over, but maybe someone like me could step in and help out. It would be sad to see this icon in banjo world go away.

Frank,

Just to be clear, the exact quote from this original article said: " For the time being, publication is still ongoing, though they are not taking any new or renewal subscriptions at this time. ".  So the door is not shut to BNL continuing. Maybe/hopefully the family will be able to find a way to continue or someone will give them a good price to buy the publication. This has been a work of love for the Nitchie's for a long long time. they certainly have not got wealthy on this project. Also to be noted, the go fund me still has a long way to go.

Don,

You were the man that developed the Logo for BNL and I saw you made an extremely generous donation to the go fund me site. Good on you and thank you. I think of all the great authors that wrote for them. I have all my magazines from the 70's. What a wonderful gift this magazine has been.

Helen Clay, one of the organizers of the GoFundMe page, posted this update sometime today. If you have ever lost a loved one to cancer, you have heard this before.

"We want to thank everyone for your generous donations. The outpouring of love for Spencer has been wonderful and overwhelming. It is with a heavy heart that I want to inform you that Spencer will be going home tomorrow. Your donations will be beneficial in the hospice setting at the home he shares with his wife and to to the nurses aides for his care that are not covered by insurance. The ongoing donations will allow Spencer to be home where he will be surrounded by the his loving family, friends and his music. The family is grateful for all of your support, prayers and love at this difficult time."

Latest update. My regards to the Nitchie family - I recall talking with Hub on the phone in the mid 1970’s,, he invited me down to come visit.

Sadness. My condolences to the Nitchie family and friends...

Updated Today by Helene Clay, Organizer

With heavy hearts, we regret to share the news that Spencer passed yesterday. His last moments were spent surrounded by love. His pain is over, and for that we are relieved.

This has all happened so fast, his diagnosis was only at the end of May and just a few months later, he is gone.

We are still appealing to your generosity to give any amount you can to cover expenses.

At this point, we have no idea what the total cost of his medical bills debt is, or what other funds will be needed to wrap up Spencer's affairs.

We appreciate your notes about how Spencer and BNL have touched your life in a positive way.

If you want to donate, please know our gratitude is deep for each and every one of you.

Don,

I want to send a letter to the family. Do I sent it to the Annapolis or the Massachusetts address.

Thanks,

Ken asked: "I want to send a letter to the family. Do I sent it to the Annapolis or the Massachusetts address."

I would guess either would do, Ken. Don lives in Massachusetts, Spencer lived in Annapolis, survived by his wife.
