Dan X. Padgett is another of those unsung heroes in banjo world. He has been around the bluegrass scene all his life and knew and picked with all the greats. Dan was one of my teachers nearly 40 years ago, I took lessons with him for about 6 months and reconnected with him a few years ago.

I went to visit for a few hours this weekend and he wanted me to see this cool gift he received -- the tie Earl Scruggs wore whenever he appeared on The Beverly Hillbillies TV show. So, it's just something I wanted to share too. Not every day ya get up close and personal with things like this. Pretty cool if ya ask me :)

I hope to get there again real soon with a better camera and audio recorder, to let him walk through his wall of photos and memorabilia that will knock your socks off. He has tons of photos and relics like this in his collection...

Dan has picked with and been friends with Earl and Lester, Earl's family, JD Crowe, The Osbourne Brothers, Raymond Fairchild, Bobby Thompson, Ricky Skaggs, on and on an on it goes, he's lived in Nashville during the heyday and played on the Grand Ole Opry, he subbed for Earl from time to time, etc.

I forget all the names now, but his photos of him hanging with performing and jamming with all the greats is more than impressive. He has thousands of photos covering the last 60 years, he was around when all the major bluegrass hitters were hitting ... there's Dan.

Hopefully more to follow in the not-too-distant future. I may be heading back up there this coming Sunday, we'll see what happens. Dan really is a character, very gregarious and he seems to have never met a stranger...

I re-connected with Dan -- again -- when I bumped into him on July 10 at The Earl Scruggs Center in Shelby, NC, during some outside jam type thing. Dan walks up with his guitar, and I ended up being the ONLY banjo picker that showed up with a banjo (kinda weird for ground zero of bluegrass banjo...). Last Sunday Dan gave me some newspaper clippings of me picking there in Shelby. Woo Hooo!! I'm in the Shelby newspapers now. I made the Big Time now LOL!!!

No, Rick, you enjoyed saying that. You took time to find the right image so you could relish saying that. So, please.

I looked at dozens of photos online before I posted the video. There are lots of different angles. They look the same to me. The one image I chose, in color, is absolutely the same tie. Nice try Rick. Why don't you post images that clearly show the same tie? Because it didn't serve your purpose.

All I can do is convey the information as provided to me. Dan was close friends with Earl and Horace, and maintains family contacts to this day, obviously. There are hundreds of photos showing them all hanging out together spanning decades. I'll take Dan's word for it. And Earl's niece. She should know.

It's possible there were more than one tie, as I see Lester also wore the same tie. As I understand this came from Earl's personal wardrobe and was not provided to him. So sure, it's possible it's not the exact same tie in every episode. Who cares? This tie was worn by Earl on The Beverly Hillbillies, and the provenance is pretty definitive and convincing, and there's plenty of photos to back that up.

========

Anyway, Dan and I texted some yesterday and he was tickled about the video. Hopefully, more to follow soon.

Rick COULD have picked among dozens of images which clearly shows this tie, but chose not to, just to be a contrarian. How about this one?

Good grief, there's naysayers in every crowd. Geeesh.

Frank I'm not trying to cause mischief, I got that grainy pic from this B.H. video

There is no doubt that is the tie in the promo shot. I also like the "more than one tie" theory, regards Rick

No worries, I didn't mean to be so harsh to you in retrospect (in the heat of the moment, yes, after a cooling off period, no). I just think stuff like this is cool ... to me it's the bluegrass equal of Elvis' cape or a shirt from one of The Beatles. So I get a little excited about silly things like this.

Earl was a wealthy man. I'm sure he had more than one tie LOL!!! Still, this was Earl's tie and it did appear on that show. Whether there was one exclusive to the show, well, who can ever really know? We weren't there. And I don't want to study photos and videos under a magnifying glass, it's really not THAT important to me. The cool factor remains :)

We're good. I appreciate the follow-up.

Super cool. Man, just to hangout with all those people, let alone jam or “fill in”….
Y’know, I’ve had the privilege of meeting a few “famous” Bluegrass musicians and I was pleasantly surprised at how cordial and friendly they have all been. It’s one of the reasons I love bluegrass so much.
I know I went on a rant there, but thanks for sharing that. What a blessed man your friend is.

Those bow ties used to be sold by Earl Scruggs Music in a little newsletter type mailer. I'm not saying the exact same ones as the Dan Padgett gift, but the type of tie. We bought some for our little family band in fact, in the late 1960s. The type are difficult to find nowadays.
