Can any banjo set up for medium strings handle Deering's Julia Belle strings? I'm curious to hear how they sound.
Yes. They're the same gauges as Pearse Hartford 1950D. This means that they're almost as heavy as Gibson (.025w 4th) and Vega (.026w 4th) Medium gauges of the 1960s and earlier.
Although some insist that these are for low tuning only, you can safely ignore that nonsense and tune 'em up to pitch except on vintage banjos with non-reinforced necks.
Heavier gauges will not sustain as long, the tone may be a little darker and the intonation will be better up the neck with a straight bridge. Do not use a bridge compensated for an unwound 3rd or your banjo will be way, way out of tune as you climb the frets.
Thanks so much, Mike. :)
