I am working on a Ludwig tenor banjo and need to replace the ebony veneer on the neck. This is plan A, anyways. In my internet research, I am coming up empty finding a source for a 1/16" veneer to replace the old. Does anyone know of a source for this? Thanks.

1/16" X ? X ?, size of what you are looking for would help.

You can buy a piece of ebony and have a slice cut. Ebony wood is running about $130 to 150 per board foot these days so have your wallet ready.

LMII has some Indian Ebony bass fingerboards 5/16 X 2 3/4 X 26 for around $31 (second grade), they do a lot of custom cutting and thicknessing so they might be able to help you out.

There are lots of thinner ebony veneers available. It isn't difficult to glue them up to achieve greater thicknesses. When well done, the glue joints are imperceptible.

I have lots of odd bits of thin ebony and with the drum sander I can make you something that's 1/16" thick. If you need a really big piece I can't help, but I have stuff up to 2-3/4" or 3" wide and 20" long or so.

Thanks Zach, glad you saw this.  I will email you the measurements.

"...on the neck." Exactly where on the neck? Do you need a piece for the peg head (aka plate) or a fretboard?

People are guessing to try and answer your question. Help us out.

Sorry about that, it's for the fingerboard.  Zach is making it for me.

Sounds like you are in good hands, then. Cool!

Good! I'm glad you have under control.

I no longer use ebony, but was going to volunteer a 1/16" piece of baked ipe.
