I started with a big black neoprene rubber stopper in a bio lab.
I used a scalpel to carve a fairly respectable shovel to indicate a BS crapified test answer.
With a green rubber ink stamp pad, I used it to mark absolutely absurd student exam answers.

Until one day, I was handing back midterm test papers. One student yells out: "I got one!"
Apparently, a few good students had got together in a biochemistry class, didn't care about blowing 5% on a midterm but they needed the coveted "green shovel." At the rate he was going, the kid was going to ace the course, anyway.

Fast forward 15 (?) years. I wake up in the post-op surgical ward and he's the MD, checking my vitals. That was one of the most satisfying moments of my existence. Still puts a smile on my face.

I don't know what that has to do with the subject, but it's a great story Brian.

When President Eisenhower was asked a question he didn’t want to or couldn’t answer for security reasons, he would talk around the subject , the reporters were baffled by this vocal display. IKE had a name for this , he called it baffling them with BS.” Since IKE was a national hero, the reporters were reluctant to call him on this. Ike was an excellent writer in a technical sense, it was said that when he wrote his memoirs about D-Day, the proofwriters couldn’t find a single spelling or grammar error in the thousands of pages. When asked what kind of a President he would make, General MacArthur said Ike would make a fine President, he was the best clerk that ever served under me.

It was George Orwell who came up with
"double plus good duck speak"
as one long word.
And that was 73 years ago.

Double speak, alternative facts, bull roar, horse hockey, are all one of the same . It is like learning a new language. The more you hear it the more you can pick out the critical words and phrases that contain large concentrations of bull feathers. The non- truthful speech of some politicians is easy to pick out, mainly because you can see them moving their lips.

My BS meter [or if you prefer, DS meter] had always worked fine. But during the last 5 years, I have had to replace its fuses frequently, due to a nearly constant state of overload conditions.
