My banjo has been a long time coming - it was about 6 months ago that I first started this process. My friend & fiddle teacher has been working on refurbishing this old banjo so that I could have a nickel-free, fretless model. He said he had an old fretless with brass hardware that needed (a lot) of work but might be something if it could be refurbished. Here's what he came up with, and I'm just so darned happy.
*I'm not quite sure where to plop this post since I didn't see a general "hello" category - feel free to move this wherever it fits better. I've been playing it for less than a week, so I guess I'll be a newbie for a good long time. However I have been playing OT fiddle for several years (15 or so?), and harbor a hope that that may give me some sort boost with clawhammer banjo, though I may be dreaming. Also, some of you may know me on Fiddle Hangout as "Earworm"
The link to my photo works, but I'd rather post the photo within my post here. If you can tell me how to do this, I'd appreciate it.

Sweet looking banjo, hope it plays as good as it looks. Fretless, huh? But coming from fiddle, makes sense. Welcome from a fellow Iowan, by the way. Knowing the tunes and having them in your head gives you a big advantage. This is as good a landing spot as any for this post.

Thanks thisoldman, it has nylgut strings - warm tone, really gorgeous sound if I can get the strings moving in all the right directions. I know, I'm a glutton for punishment where fretless is concerned - but I'm to a point (in life, I guess) where I figure I'd better start where I want to end, or I may never get there. I just love the sound of fretless, and yeah, coming from fiddle, it just doesn't scare me.
I played clawhammer for awhile when I took up banjo, with a Gold Tone CC-OT. Never felt the need to "move up", but if I had, a banjo like yours would have been on my wish list.
Did you want nickel free for the esthetics or some other reason? Just curious :-)
I’m allergic. It gives me a bad rash. Finding a banjo with no nickel is difficult, too.
Beautiful banjo for sure. Congratulations and welcome!
Thanks! I just hope I can do it justice. By the way, it has a gorgeous full tone too - I have some work to do!
