I thought it would be fun to list some hypothetical misconceptions which an overly concerned/perfectionist banjo player might have:

1. If I don’t have a factory original prewar flathead Gibson Mastertone (gold plated, H&F Granada nonetheless), I will NEVER sound good.

2. I MUST have a Gibson banjo of some sort (at the very least), in order to fit the TRUE “bluegrass banjo player” mold.

3. I cannot be satisfied with myself sounding any less glorious than Earl.

4. Archtop bluegrass banjos are for SISSIES!

Everyone KNOWS that the flathead is the only REAL banjo, and that archtops are just make-believe, pretend thingamajigs.

5. I have to spend over $1000 on a Dannick flathead ring for a currently original TB-4 archtop. The Dannick ring will REALLY give the TB-4 the TRUE “prewar” tone. Never mind the stupid excuse (shake head in disgust) of an archtop ring.

6. A “prewar reproduction” flathead tone ring will magically impart legendary qualities to my banjo, that somehow will surpass those of the original prewar flathead ring.

7. There is one, and only one kind, of “prewar” tone. All prewar five string Gibsons (including sub-Mastertones), sound EXACTLY the same.

8. There is no banjo in the universe that could ever make me start playing something other than a Gibson.

9. The wood in prewar Gibson necks and rims/resonators, when new, had an extraneous quality which wildly surpassed the quality of wood in other prewar banjos.

10. All Gibson banjos are good - that  70s piece of garbage?

After I replaced the neck (plus rim, tone ring and resonator), that Gibson (?!) banjo sounded FANTASTIC!

11. I HAVE to have at least 15 other banjos to make absolutely certain that I won’t be dissatisfied.

12. After I get “X” banjo, I will be transported to banjo heaven!

#13 and #14:

If I don’t go to IBMA, I will be shunned by everyone. Anyone who’s somebody in bluegrass, knows that the KEY to success is to be an extremely social individual.

I have to go nuts (pun intended) on how closely my banjo mimics Sonny’s/Earl’s/JD’s/Kenny’s...etc, etc.

#15: Reading and writing on on BHO will make you a better banjo picker.

#16: Planting 1 vs 2 fingers on your right hand, wrapping vs planting the left thumb on the neck, and the difference between clawhammer and frailing are all discussions worth having.

#17: People actually care about the nuanced racial history of the banjo and enjoy reading about which tuning was the "original standard".

#18: People actually care about the difference between "round peak" banjo and other old-time styles.

#19: The short 5th string isn't just a cobbled together design that was made obsolete by modern steel strings.

#20: Planetary tuners aren't an inferior design that sacrifice functionality for aesthetic nostalgia.

When you do learn every earl lick, break, and kick off, and play all his songs up to recorded speed...and faster,

Nashville will come calling...
" hello Nashville, is that you,
Hello, hello,..

Warp!

I think the Gibson love is a little too easy to grossly exaggerate and beat up on. But whatever. I always say if Gibsons don't matter then everyone else is perfectly free to stop copying them in every minute detail.

#26: It is impossible to read musical notation for banjo because notes can be found at more than one fret and stuff.

Terry i think it would be an excellent post(if you havent already done so) to explain your technique. I saw you at galax one year and me being a lefty on lefty banjo, I was utterly blown away watching you play. And you sounded awesome. Your approach to banjo playing would make a good blog.
