Recently an unrequested window has been "popping" up with news, weather, etc.. It is something I find annoying and it has caused problems. I am guessing Microsoft Edge is the culprit. I have never accessed Microsoft Edge and even tried, with no luck, to remove it.

If I keep having unrequested nuisance software. I may switch to shareware or even have two desktops. One would be used for internet connectivity and the other for application software. If everything is working, no more updates on the on the computer with my data and their applications.

Same thing here.
Move the cursor to where the new "feature/annoyance" appears on your task bar.
Right-click
Move your cursor to "News and Interests"
In the box that pops up click on "Turn Off"
That should eliminate it for you.

It happened with the last upgrade. I did find a way of switching it off but that led to a corrupted toolbar and a non-working search box. So I've left it on and will try again with the next upgrade in the hope that they've fixed it. I assume Microsoft's QA department are on furlough.

You have to understand and accept that the folks at Microsoft know what's best for you.

Same here. The last automated update suddenly had this popup weather screen that I DID NOT WANT. It took some googling and whatnot to figure out how to make it go away, and as usual for Microsoft that setting was buried. There was no apparent way to turn it off.

After I got it back to the way I wanted, I went to Microsoft's website on the page for that update and gave them some feedback on how that is not wanted or appreciated. As if that will do any good, but I got to vent a little anyway.

On my PC there is no "feature/annoyance" on the taskbar. Never even heard that before now.

And, since I had never used or wanted weather to be on the task bar, I had no idea what that feature was even called so didn't know what to look for. After googling for a while I was able to find out that this was called "News and Interests" (who knew? Not me!!) and from there was able to turn it off with the News/Feature settings as you point out. But hoo boy, it took me a while to find that out.

Seems to me like a right-click on that Weather icon which showed up should have been all that is necessary, but nope, resistance IS futile, and Microsoft pretty much banks on people just giving up.

Thanks Paul -

Months back when "Edge" showed up, and I could not get rid of it , I knew I was in for trouble.

Gee, I had the same thing happen on my computer and I'm really enjoying it. You get not only weather, but local, state and national news and stock market ideas, local traffic updates, etc. Mine is down at the bottom of the computer and doesn't come up unless I click into What's the big deal? If you don't like it, can't you just ignore it??

I would argue that if you DO like it, can't you just ignore the folks that don't and are trying to disable it??

The thought of using Dosbox to run Win 3.1 is becoming more and more attractive. The side effects would be amazing: people would actually use their phones to talk to each other again...

And I would argue that if you're trying to disable it, you ignore those who like it and want to keep it.   In other words, different strokes for different folks, right?

Sorry, I don't understand your problem. Oh yeah, it does not come up on my Linux boxes. Oh well I guess I just miss all the 'nice' ideas that Microsoft has.
