I'm looking to upgrade from my Goodime 2 to a nicer, warmer, open back banjo that holds intonation up the neck for clawhammer. Does anyone happen to know of any shops near Charlotte, NC where I can try out banjos with scoops, different sized heads, etc? I know Pisgah Banjos is a couple of hours away in Asheville but I didn't know if there was anything a bit closer. Thanks!

Pisgahs are a GREAT option - I've owned a few now and Patrick is an awesome person to deal (and chat!) with. However, this guy is just outside of Charlotte, makes fairly unique instruments, and may be worth a visit:

As for actual shops, (rather than builders) I have no idea.

Best store for open backs closest to Charlotte would be Acoustic Corner, which is in Black Mountain (just outside of Asheville.   They carry Pisgah, Cedar Mtn. and others.  Their web site typically is up to date but I have seen great banjos there that didn't last long enough to make the site, including a Tubaphone with Pisgah neck that was killer.
