I just finished up my 12th banjo build this week.

Curly Maple neck and resonator, block maple rim, 16" radius Richlite fretboard, mother of pearl inlay, Saga hardware, Sullivan V35 Tone Ring, hand rubbed sunburst with Crystalac Britetone Satin Finish.

If you want to see progress pics and videos of the build, check out my instagram. https://www.instagram.com/redarrowryan/

tasteful, not gaudy, it took a ton of work.
Could I see your workshop please? (I avoid instagram, facebook, twitter, etc.)

lapsteel Thanks! I appreciate the compliment!

My shop's nothing to write home about, it's just half a two-car garage. Here's a photo after the last time I cleaned it, it normally doesn't look this neat!

Nice job with the satin finish!  I have been using the Brite-tone gloss, but I have an order coming up for satin and I'm looking forward to it.

Thanks for the shop photo.
It’s huge!
It must be nice to work in there in summer with the door opened.

Ken LeVan - Are you spraying or brushing the finish on? I spray the satin on and I really like it as I don't need to do any follow up sanding or buffing. Plus, once it's cured, it has more of a speed neck feel thank the gloss.

jacot23- Thanks!

lapsteel -Actually, I have a mini-split AC in there, so I don't open the doors much. The summer here is actually crazy hot and humid.

Nice work! And I like that "Bob's Big Boy" headstock shape.

I've done a lot of necks by brushing, and it works very well for that, but for broad areas like resonators, you can get a smoother surface, requiring less leveling, by spraying.  Also you can put on thicker coats with a spray gun, requiring less coats.

Either way, you have to clean the brush or clean the spray gun immediately, both of which take about the same amount of time.

I don't know if it would be any different with the satin. Right now I rub the gloss with 3M cloths to make it satin if I want satin, and I use rubbed on satin Osmo on the playing parts of necks regardless.
