Should you stretch head when you have fitted it or let it settle on it’s own. Thanks.

A skin head stretches a LOT. A plastic one, not so much. In either case, put it on and get it up to a pitch or tension you like, then check it every few days til it becomes stable.

A plastic head can settle within a week. A Renaissance head stretches slower so it takes longer to settle. Maybe two or three weeks. I have no experience with skin heads.

what I was told by Jeff Menzies for Goat skins soak them for at least 30 minutes or longer then lay out the skin how you want it on your banjo keep in mind what I ask him about was for gourd banjos, he said to start tacking and start stretching I tried a practice skin that I had purchased so i could get a feel for the process Jeff stated he trims as he is tacking, a lot of people say do not trim until the skin is dry I will say i did not trim the one thing you have to keep in mind when you install one, (as it dries it gets tighter) which is true when my practice skin was dry it sounded like a high pitched drum I did stretch it almost as tight as I could stretch it and when it was dry it was really tight, the nice thing about not trimming as you tack is if it does not look rite once dry you can remove re soak and start over but i also found when you do remove after it dries it seems to get more brittle with each re do
hope this makes sense and helps

when you stretch a skin head that is how you fit them unless you purchase a pre mounted skin head from John Balch
