Good luck to John on his project. I would not want to moderate it.

The division that he describes is factionalism.

Beliefs divide, but shared values unite.

When we self-justify that ‘me’ is more important than community and truth we are culpable for that separation into ‘camps’. Sadly that is what John is experiencing even within his own family.

Anyone who truly understands the importance of the health and wellbeing of community has no option but to do what they can to redress that imbalance.

He's right and I wish him and his family all the best in addressing this insidious problem.

Truth is the truth.

Opinions are merely opinions.

Increasingly we are losing sight of and crucially, respect for, the former and confusing the two.

As your question demonstrates.

Mike, how do you distinguish between Truth and Opinion? Is not what you you decide to accept as Truth merely your Opinion? Why should your opinion carry more weight than anyone else's opinion? I would just love to have the certainty of "truth is truth" but have found that any such certainty, at least on my part, can be subject to error. Have you now surpassed such error?

I thought the letter was outstanding. John understands that you don't come together by shaming or otherwise alienating those that may not agree with you ..... something we have seen increasingly in the past few years. This is true even within our own families.

Not going to drift a thread about Bernunzios newsletter.

Sufficient to make one reply that of course a held opinion (mine or anyone's) cannot claim to be objective truth. In most everyday situations conversation relates our perspectives on experience anyway; about as subjective as it gets. A person who fuses their own opinion and objective truth as 'naturally one and the same' is either undergoing psychosis with delusions of being the Oracle of Delphi or more mundanely...a politician.

Start a separate thread...
