I heard something on the news today on the radio about a lab in an unnamed foreign country experimenting with combining monkey parts and human parts to make a human monkey. Originally it was going to be for making donor organs available to humans, but now the lab is open to experimenting letting the nervous system develop longer and just "watching to see what happens" and "in the name of science" to develop a true hybrid.

Incredibly irresponsible to me, but I'm just a pure human, so what do I know??? Talk about losing our unique identity.

What do you think about this?? I don't have a link but I'm sure it's out there somewhere.  I don't think it's new news anyway.

There's a group out there agitating for legal rights for ALL primates.
A human/monkey hybrid might get to the top of their list.

People MY age remember when cross-breeding members of two different RELIGIONS was considered a huge mistake.

I believe Joseph Stalin during WW2 authorised an investigation into breeding humans with great apes to create a hybrid warrior It was a majestic failure.

There is a belief by some in the BigFoot community, that has already happened and that’s whats roaming the forest of America. When a tiger and lion is crossed the offspring is larger as with the horse and donkey the mule is larger. So it makes sense that the offspring from an ape/monkey/ chimp and human the offspring would be larger.

Sounds delicious, "I'll take a Human and Monkey Combo, and Super-size it!"

If true, that sort of experimentation is reckless, dangerous and totally unethical.

Considering that humans and chimpanzees share 99% of their genetic codes, I question that we have a “unique identity” at all

It's only 99% of the parts of our genetics which are comparable. There's quite a lot that isn't.

The bit of this that rang false was:
Ross suspects the researchers have more basic scientific questions in mind. Injecting human cells into monkey embryos could address “questions of evolutionary distance and interspecies barriers,” he says.

If that's the intention why make things hard for yourself by choosing humans as one of your two experimental species ? You'd gain as much knowledge on these sort of fundamental issues if you injected monkey cells into chip embryos, without troubling the ethics committee.

Agreed.

And how it makes me feel is very sad.

Maybe the humour elsewhere on this thread is a way for others to deal with or hide their sadness and disgust? I hope so, because it would be depressing to know that there are people who really think or care so little that they find it nothing more than a source of amusement.

Most people (me included) would agree. But that's not going to stop it happening somewhere.

Question for you all (and I don't have an answer). If this 'reckless, dangerous and totally unethical' experiment leads to a medical treatment that could save your life would you refuse that treatment ?

Human animal chimeras have been created in labs since the 1970's. There were many experiments done to try and grow human livers in pigs, for example. This is the first time that a primate was involved. It is not new technology. Legal and ethical concerns were discussed world wide before the experiments began. Will humankind ever learn that just because we can is not an automatic green-light that we should?

I'm tempted to imagine the scenario where someone self-centred and stupid enough is finally able to extend their lifespan indefinitely because science has provided the 'can' and they have the vast sum of money to pay. Presumably that someone will go smiling into the nightmare and living hell that awaits?

Yes, we share 99% of our genes, but we don't even have the same number of chromosomes.  A human/chimp hybrid living to fruition is extremely unlikely.

That's a completely empty statement.

More interestingly, what do you think about the OP?
