I had heard some tunes a while back by a guy who used no finger picks at all, and he called it melancholy banjo music. Played a lot of things much slower than the usual bluegrass style. I really liked it a lot but I have no idea how to look him up.
I don't remember his name!! But I do know he had full albums that could be purchased.
any one have any ideas???
Perhaps Tony Ellis?
There's an album out called "Melancholy with Banjo" by Sonny Pursall.
Best I can do, on such short notice
Thanks Phillip it was Tony Ellis !
I have been trying to remember that for ages !!
Tony Ellis is a haunting and soulful player and composer of banjo music. He often plays Stelling models including a lovely custom "woody" without a metal tone ring. There is so much wonderful stuff to do with resonator banjos beyond the confines of bluegrass rules & regs. Including playing bluegrass tunes at non-hyper speeds.
