Any Stormy Kromer owners in banjo land?  I have always remembered the distinctive hat my grandpa Ed wore when I was a kid growing up in the Midwest. It was not until 2 days ago that I learned that the hat had a brand name and a storied history. My grandpa was a railroad engineer during the steam era, he retired about 1952 as diesels were taking over.

The Stormy Kromer hat had its origin in the Midwest railroad industry around the turn of the 20th century.  It seems that engineer George "Stormy" Kromer kept losing his hats to the wind when he stuck his head out of the locomotive window. In 1903 he asked his wife to modify one of his caps by adding ear flaps for warmth and to hold it tightly on his head. It worked so well some of his fellow workers asked him to make hats for them. It snow-balled and Stormy went into business making hats which were to become classics among railroaders and outdoorsmen in the Midwest.

The hats were sewn with 6 panels forming the dome. Railroaders began refering to each other as "6 pointers". When a rail worker arrived in an unfamiliar town he would go from bar to bar hollering into the doorway "Any 6 pointers in here?".  This iconic hat is still being made today in Ironwood Michigan in the awesome Upper Peninsula.

Photo on the left is my grandpa Ed (standing on the right side) with SK hat.

Photo on the right is grandpa Ed (standing front row center). It looks like 2 of the other workers might be wearing Kromers as well.

I've seen the occasional one around, but few and far enough between that I can' t say exactly who/where/when [maybe my brother-in-law in Nova Scotia??].   When  a guy wants to cover his ears, does the band slide down, or fold down?

The ear flaps are pulled (slide) down.

Oh you knows I wear one!

I have a wintertime Kromer made of wool, and a summertime version made of waxed cotton. Great hats!

All the old heads back in the day wore a Kromer cap here on the railroad...now there’s only a few people including myself that do. Guess there’s not as many rails hanging their head out the window at 50mph anymore.

Awesome shots of granddad Ed and his Kromer. Thanks for sharing those.

Good for you Dow!  6 POINTS!

Standing to the right of my granddad is his son, and seated behind him on the engine another son, my uncles, all engineers.  My dad, both grandfathers, great-grandfather, brother, most of my cousins and myself all worked on the railroad.  I must confess I have never owned a Kromer.  As my hair gets thinner on top I can see one in my future.

Had to wear mine today. Cold. Snow. Yesterday it was 70. Tonight into the 20's. Gonna freeze hard. Everything that is budding out is going to get nipped.

I have one and wear it all winter above 0f. Below that I wear a double thick stocking cap that my wife knits. Mine is bright red to wear in the woods during hunting season and when it is snowing. I picked it up on Ironwood, Mich years ago.

Wore mine from October to April for years. Then, we moved to beautiful Tennessee and it only gets dug out in January and February when my little Feist and I are chasing squirrels up on the mountain.

I really like the look of those hats - I’m going to see if I can track one down over here, it would make a great, yet fitting alternative to the tweed flat caps that we traditionally wear whilst hunting.

Thanks Jonty. Was just wanting to show off my hat! It was a gift from my daughter to deal with the Wyoming winters. And it's been needed here in Missouri as well.

Here’s my non-winter Kromer.

Nice and bright...to match my safety vest...well, sort of.

Is the tie above the bill to loosen/tighten/adjust and fit the hat to the head?

Those are one of the things that were designed for function instead of fashion and looked great because of it.

It’s April 24th and I had to grill steak and scallops tonight. It was also cold and snowing and didn’t think twice about throwing on the ol Stormy Kromer.
Sure keeps the bald spots wind free and dry!!!
