Curious what the experts think about this banjo. I am wondering if the frets were a later addition, or if the parts add up to the description of being an 1880-ish home build... the pot is what interested me. it looks approx 12.5"-13". The seller said it was made in SW Virginia

Looks like some crooked frets; was probably a fretless originally, assuming they made these fretless...

The tuners look like replacements to me as well. if you look real close, the side of the peghead looks like it had geared tuners possible installed on the ouside, then filled with dowel or something when these were installed.

I thought the same about the frets. But holy WOW someone played the heck out of it sometime in its lifetime to get wear marks like that....

Also wondering if the strings should be replaced with nylgut? The ones on are detuned and appear to be light guage steel.

Is the tailpiece folded-over copper?
And are the screws on the side of the peghead functional, or decorative?
Very cool!

I wondered if originally it had tuning pegs that went out the side of the headstock, asymetrical. Kinda crazy thought.. i really am not sure!
