Hi all
Ive been making 100s of bluegrass banjo 3ply rims and now people are asking me to make 2 ply open back rims.
Can any Old time open back banjo builder answerer me this rim question?

What inside and outside diameter do you prefer on a 2 ply rim before you turn it?

Thanks

I prefer it to be as close to final dimensions as is reasonably possible. Realistically that ends up being less than 1/4 inch.

Two 1/4 plies will result in a 1/2 inch thick blank from which some material is removed in truing up the rim and sanding resulting in a rim less than 1/2 inch thick.

My preference if rim is to be 1/2 inch thick is add 1/8 inside and out: 3/4 to begin. Bear in mind this is one side of center and the same applies to the other side, so if the diameter is to finish at 12 inches, beginning outside diameter is 12 1/4, insde is 10 3/4.
