Bought a new rk elite 75, was having some sound issues, took banjo apart, saw that the banjo head is uneven. It sits slightly higher on ring on the armrest side than opposite site as a result, and I think is effecting overall action. There is a clear layer on one side on bottom of head before white part starts. Can someone please give advice in pics below on what the head issue is here and if I should get a new head?

First, I'd be curious as to what "sound issues" you were having. A head that simply appears unevenly installed is not necessarily a problem; it's just that the tension hoop has been pulled down more on one side than the other.

Without some knowledge of the sound issues you were experiencing, it's too difficult to tell if it's due to the head (althouigh it could be that the mylar has pulled loose from the mounting ring; one can't tell in the photo of the edge).

Thanks George, sound issue was buzzing on first 4 frets caused by low action I assume, so I was ensuring head tension was correct and noticed uneven head. Added a photo of what other wide looks like, how one side of head is higher than other

String buzzing has nothing to do with the head not being even. This head does not pose problem, just tighten the hooks in such a way that the tension hoop is perfectly level. If there is string buzzing, the problem is somewhere else…

If it’s not a broken head

Start with hooks at 12,3,6 & o o clock

And tighten slowly and evenly

Keep an eye on it

Add the other hooks

Tighten 1/6 of a turn with care

It looks like a Taiwanese Remo crimped head and the mylar has pulled out of the crimping. If the crown height is not consistent around the head, replace it.

What Bob Smakula says. If the height from top of flesh hoop to plane of head is not the same all around then you're not going to get the tension hoop/stretcher band to sit level with even tension all around.

Since you bought the banjo new, the head should be covered under warranty. Send Recording Kingthe pictures you shared here, plus a picture showing uneven crown measurements. They should send you a new head.   (Or send information wherever Recording King instructs for warranty claims)

Good luck.

I would replace the head as Bob said. It looks to be pulling out unevenly.
