Hey guys! My name is Alex, and I'm pretty new to this whole thing. I bought my banjo two years ago with the intentions to learn how to play, but quickly grew bored of it when I wasn't making the progress I wanted to make. What makes it worse is that I was literally less than a month in when I gave up! This time, however, I really, really want to dedicate myself to learning the instrument.
A buddy of mine suggested that I check out this site, as he's self taught and said that it would be very beneficial for me. Just casually browsing I can totally see why.
I'm really looking forward to interacting with all of you, and I'm very open to all of your advice and teaching. Happy playing, y'all!
Welcome to the hangout!
You will find all the help here you ask for and some you don't.
Becoming a banjo player is like going to college. Some people start without declaring a major (Scruggs, Clawhammer, 2 finger, whatever). Some declare one early then change it. Some dabble in everything. Some know exactly what they want to do. Some drop out.
Never mind, Banjo playing is nothing like college. If it was I would have been kicked out years ago. Probably wouldn't have got in in the first place.

Welcome. I would bet 98% of us felt just as you. Fun is the first word, and part of that is to take time, enjoy the trip. Its a long trip, but you will get to your first ice cream stand sooner than you think. Don't let Youtube overwhelm you. Goto the BHO Forum that addresses the style you want to learn presently. get more replies and advice.
Good luck, brad

Free advice from an OLD Person:
Don't wear yourself out trying to sound exactly like anybody else.
People who want to hear somebody else will go on the Internet and HEAR somebody else.
MORE free advice: Don't waste any energy resenting people who are younger and better and learn faster .
There are so many of them!! If I had done that, I wouldn't have enough energy left to type this message.

Reading and writing on a banjo forum will not make you a better banjo player.
Would improve your debating skills though.
