The place where they're playing in that video looks very familiar. Several years ago my wife and I visited a place that looked exactly like that. Near Asheville, NC I think. And I remember talking with a guy that worked there. He had a cheap banjo in his office. I asked if I could play it. He let me and I think I played Cripple Creek.

You can say THAT again...!
I don't think any acoustic stringed instrument prevents it from being bluegrass (as long as it's not overpowering). They are playing in cut time, They are singing in nice harmony, there's a banjo, mandolin, and guitar. All telltale signs of bluegrass. It could do without the percussion instrument, that thing really takes away from the groove, I would categorize this as bluegrass. Great bluegrass? Nope, but bluegrass nonetheless. Their wardrobe says questionable powers of decision making.

I'm betting that some banjo players "wince" when it is considered a "must" instrument in bluegrass. I think the banjo, like the other stringed instruments, can be adapted to other types of music. Some banjo players started playing bluegrass music because it was the only option available when they started playing.
I liked bands like the "Seldom Scene" and "Newgrass Revival", but the label seems to sometime be misapplied. I guess I should not be surprised. The same thing has happened in "country" music. Big $$$ aren't in Bluegrass or traditional Country music.
Bluegrass badly needs some new songwriters. In addition, it should stop having performances out in the middle of nowhere. How many of todays young bluegrass singers have every seen a log cabin ?
