American Banjo Museum posted a photo of Dolly and her fancy, be jeweled banjo. There wasn't any info about her banjo. Anybody know something about it? I'm just curious.

Yes, that's Dolly and her banjo. It appears to be a left handed instrument.

Kinda looks like a Bakelite banjo that’s had 5 lbs of rinestones added. Kinda cute when she’s holding it IMO

Dolly plays right handed. That picture must have been reversed.

Yeah, that's Dolly, & yeah, those are rhinestones. But I'm as curious as the OP as to who is to blame for making this banjo ?

Dolly Parton is an American hero, a songwriting genius with a voice at the level of Aretha Franklin.
Jus' sayin'...nice prop banjo in the promo pic! She's definitely a righty.

I would go see Dolly again!, I saw this beautiful instrument in person on stage and yes it is amazing, especially what she can do with it.

She's a national treasure! Below is one my favorites. It's a Cole Porter and Dolly collaboration with the best of the usual Bluegrass suspects. She let Jim Mills play the banjo on this one. The best mandolin kick off I've ever heard.

I too a big Dolly fan. I'm also impressed with her banjo playing, especially since she has never seen her picking hand while playing!

I Wonder how she can fret the strings with those left hand nails...

When in doubt, blame Greg Rich.

That's terrific Wayne ...... great and tasteful instrumentals and vocals.  Incidentally, that is not me doing the mandolin kick-off!

There are old photos and videos of Dolly fingering guitar and banjo chords. Nowadays, she tunes to major chords or open 5ths and frets straight across because of her nails.

And she still stays relevant with Gen Xers apparently. The other day, my daughter told me that Dolly wrote, 'Jolene' and 'I will Always Love You' on the same day. I assumed my daughter only listened to rap and pop.

Dolly has helped distribute over 150 million books to kids in various countries. A magnificent human with a heart of gold.

Dolly uses a variety of prop instruments in her shows that are painted white and completely encrusted with rhinestones, including a fiddle, autoharp, guitar, dulcimer, and even a piano in addition to the banjo (it appears that she just mimes playing them for show, despite having the actual ability). I suspect the "blame" lies with Steve Summers, her costume designer, although she once said that she personally worked on hot-gluing some of the rhinestones to pass time on her tour bus. So, it's really unclear what the base instrument is under all that modification, but it's a good question! I've wondered the same thing. I would guess it was probably chosen more for the ease of painting and glitzing it up, and maybe also for light weight, than for any tone or playability concerns.

Yeah I'm also a lifelong fan. Dolly was literally the reason I first took up the banjo when I was a boy!

I think you nailed it! Not at all surprised that it's a cheap mass-produced BSO. It's just a prop.
