I just got a tonehoop off eBay advertised as a pw gibson tone hoop but it’s odd to me . It’s 10-7/8 wide 1/4 thick and chrome plated seems brass cuz it doesn’t stick to a magnet ??. I’ve been wanting one for a build . Does this sound right to anyone? I’ve only seen raw brass and I’m just worried about the tension hoop pulling sideways on the head ! Cuz it seems like it’s not tight enough between the hoop and tension hoop. !!
I’ve been comparing it to my other banjos and it right I think that I’m trying to use a metric tension hoop so I assume they run a tad big I wanna order a tension hoop from Chris at companion banjo but if anyone has a gibson hoop can u compare and make me feel better
I have a Gibson tone hoop. It is obviously brass ( yellow). I believe it to be original because it came with a hex hole flange and the 22 shoes. When installed it should sit slightly inside the 11" rim so 10 7/8" sounds about right.
If you buy about $5 worth of 1/4" brass rod and roll it into a hoop, you will have the same thing so they are not particularly valuable.
Thanks fathand I checked it with my other banjos and it does indeed fit properly. I never knew they chromed them. I’ve made steel ones and I swear they sound like a no hole flathead but I’ve never found decent brass to do any but I guess I should look harder either way I got this one shipped total 30$ so I’m happy
I need to say I’m a big hoop fan I have a rb1 that I believe has top 1% of all banjo tone and I’ve played banger etc. the metal sting is nice but the fat loud hoop tone is something else. I’ve made hoops with block rims and those can be strong if not obnoxious
I've made several brass tone hoops over the years. My material of choice is 1/4 inch round phosphor bronze welding rod. I buy it at a welding supply shop in 36 inch lengths.
