on January 19th, my uncle took the oath of office for President of the United States at the United States Capitol. Although it was 9 years before I was born, our family is proud of his service to this great country!

Your uncle was FDR? I didn’t think he had any siblings.

Geez, John....I didn’t think you had any Dutch blood in you...!

This gent was a distant relative on my Dad's side...

"Henry Jackson van Dyke Jr. (November 10, 1852 – April 10, 1933) was an American author, educator, diplomat, and clergyman.

He officiated at the funeral of Mark Twain at the Brick Presbyterian Church on April 23, 1910" .....(where he said the rumors of his death were NOT greatly exaggerated) laugh

Some pretty interesting guesses, but not right yet. Another clue is “service to this great country” and you may want to check the date.

Hmmm ... There were no U.S. presidential inaugurations on the 19th. All the January ones were on the 20th or 21st. Prior to FDR's second inauguration, the standard date was 4 March. Exceptions were for inaugurations after the sitting president died in office.

Your uncle took the oath "for" president. ??

The plot thickens.

Was your uncle a stand-in for the President while they were doing a run-through before the actual ceremony?

My guess is that he took the official photos or perhaps the film.

I've got a vague memory that we've heard this story before (4 years ago ?) and this was the answer then.

Well I did spot that it was a day earlier than the usual inaugurations and the one which fits the date was the first was the first one not to be on the 4th of March (Wikipedia helped me with that one). Is there any significance to the date having changed?

Bingo Jeff ....... my dad.s brother was a Chief Petty Officer in the Navy stationed in DC. He was the size and stature as FDR and was selected for the rehearsal the day before the inauguration, so he was the stand-in.

Sorry for the late response but at 6:00 this morning I thought it was a good idea to go to the emergency room and get an operation to have my gall bladder removed.  I was home by 3:00 .  The surgeon eve fixed my umbilical hernia. ??. Wonderful care !

That's a great story! Not many people can claim to have taken the presidential oath!

And I'm glad your op went well... did they change your oil whilst they were at it? ;)

hope you feel better soon!

Thanks Dale ........ I am so incredibly appreciative of those men and women in the health profession. My surgeon was a wonderful Hispanic woman who was extremely thorough.   The only problem was understanding her accent without my hearing aids. I have lived with my "outie" for 30 years ........ can't wait to show my new one off with my 6 pack abs!
