I did a no sleep purchase on offerup and got this "Gibson" that was discussed last week. It's more interesting than I thought. It's got an engraved presto Tailpeice, armrest and tension hoop. Also an interesting no hole flathead tone ring , that seems small. I do t have the right wrench to take off these hook. The rim has a Gibson decal but no stamp. Can anyone help me Id the parts? The neck is also interesting. The inlays look hand cut and it's really old, but doesn't have a Gibson logo on the head stock or quite the right shape imo. Any Idea on these parts? What kind of rim could this be?
Maybe a pyramid ring ?
that would be cool!
Okay.. so this gets weirder .. I took the head off and here is the inside. The tone ring seems like like some sort conversion ring and the rim has holes where it has been cut. Would this have been a ball bearing rim?

is that an 11" rim or a 10-1/2?
A ball bearing rim would not have shoes bolted through the rim. I have no idea what those odd holes are for. The tone ring is not original, nor are the nuts holding the hooks. The tension hoop is questionable, and the tailpiece has a modern replacementcover (an original would say "Gover Patent Presto). The neck isn't even close to a Gibson product.
Although the rim may be Gibson, if it is, it's a lesser model, such as a TB1.
In short, very little, if any, of this banjo was made by Gibson.. If there are any Gibson bits, they have been ruined by extraneous out-of-place engraving (the tension hoop looks like an amateur effort)..
How does it sound?
Setup was bad when I got it, It do have a nice low growl to it, but intonation up the neck was bad. I'll get it set up and see eventually.
