Every once in a while, a group or team come together and create a masterpiece. I think this is true with the three seasons of Hinterland. Yes, it is only my personal opinion.

For those who are unfamiliar to the detective series filmed in Wales, here's a link to the trailer. See for yourself > youtube.com/watch?v=cuVQknRG5cU

Thing is once you've seen Wallander (Krister Henriksson version) everything else in that genre seems to be trying to but not reaching those heights.

The line in the trailer where She demands of Him

"Did you sleep with her? DID YOU??"    reminds me of an old OLD joke where the one guy asks another

"Did you sleep with my wife??", and the other fellow replies: "Swear to God, not a WINK!"

With Wallander you'll have to use subtitles unless you speak Swedish. With Hinterland they kindly made it in both Welsh and English.

Shetland is a great series as well. Lots of beautiful and scenic backgrounds. From the other side of the British Isles.

You see Hinterland through a different pair of eyes if you, as I have, spend a wet week in Aberystwyth, My favourite scandi-noir was Lillyhammer (if that counts). If not then the first series of The Bridge. And if we are talking Euro police in general then Spiral (Engrenages). Why they bothered with the British version of Wallander with Branagh, or the American version of The Killing, is a mystery.
