I love playing 5 string, though I also love strumming. Whenever I strum on my banjo (with a pick) the strings get all buzzy and loose afterwards. Will plectrum strings be okay for playing 5 string styles? I would most likely buy a string of the same gauge as the last for the 5th string.

Yes. No problem. You might try a set of these.

Pearse 1950 Set

Ignore the "low tuning" nonsense. These are actually a little lighter than Vega Medium sets made into the early '70s and Gibson Medium set discontinued around 5 years ago.

These should cure your fret rattle when strumming. You'll notice a bit more depth in the bottom end—the trade-off is a bit less sustain. If you use a straight bridge, these will fret more in tune up the neck but a bridge compensated for a plain 3rd string will cause the wound 3rd will fret way out of tune (again, fixed with a straight bridge).

If the rattle or buzzing comes from string vibrating on the fret board, a heavier string might help. When I took the 5th string off to play plectrum style I used a slightly tallied bridge rather than restring.

No, the buzzing isn't from the 5th. Putting a cloth under it works quite well to stop it from doing that. I'm definitely gonna get heavier strings, I just don't want to get them too heavy. If I am correct, the Deering Goodtime 2 isn't meant to take super heavy strings, but I reckon medium should work fine
