Hi everyone. I just started learning clawhammer banjo a couple of years ago. I'm looking for Halloween songs to play. Would love to hear any advice for scary banjo songs.
Here's my first attempt which was harder than I thought because it's in 5/4 time. I'm playing along with John Carpenter's theme from Halloween. Hope it's not too scary.

That was cute.

If you sing, there's always the Kingston Trio's rendition of "With Her Head Tucked Underneath Her Arm"

Thanks Dave. This is a good one. Nice ominous tone to it.

I used co-host a Bluegrass radio show on public radio; below are two that we always played for Halloween.

If you're up for it, try the theme from "The Munsters" and the theme from "The Addams Family."

If you don't recall either tune, you can find them on Youtube.

The Unquiet Grave. Mike Iverson does a good version. G minor tuning, but 4/4 time. (If you can play 5/4 clawhammer you can probably manage anything!)

Ones I play /sing – Oh Death, Bedlam Boys, Wild Hog/Bangum, Hills of Mexico, Cruel Sister, Ghost Riders, Days of 49, Trail of the Buffalo , Dona Dona, Gone Gonna Rise Again, Hang Me, Hanging Johnny, Mac Pherson's Farewell, Roddy McCorley, VooDoo Queen Marie, Gin and the Raspberry.....There is no shortage of songs where someone croaks, hangings, stabbings, homicides, pesticides, it all works. I have some of those on a CD we made but I am too tech-challenged to post anything. Spook Away!.... banjered

Thanks Omeboy! I have both seasons of "The Munsters" on DVD. What a great idea.

For a perfect example of "It's not WHAT you say, it's HOW you say it!", imagine this verse of "You are my sunshine", delivered an a menacing voice, reminiscent of Boris Karloff:

I'll always love you and make you happy
If you will only say the same
But if... you....leave me.... and love another
You'll regret.. it... all...
some day!

That's what my brother did, at a Halloween gig some years back.
Scared ME, even though I'd heard it at regeasal  already.
